About
In 1995, I founded HDG in Versailles. Prior to that I had danced in a number of studio settings, taught gymnastics at YMCAs, danced and participated in college programs, and danced at the Springfield Ballet. I knew I wanted something different. I wanted my studio to be a place where everyone, of any age, gender, or background, could feel at home and appreciated for what they COULD accomplish; not held back by what they could not do. With hard work and dedication, I believe anyone can excel. And everyone has talents unique to themselves. Instead of focusing on weaknesses, my studio would reward and build on the strengths. Everyone has a skill that should be celebrated. I created a space where students of all ages and abilities could contribute to the choreography- a place where even they shyest class member had a voice. Because I really feel that dance is collaboration. At HDG, you will find that class structures are not what you would expect if you have been in other places. We accomplish huge things, but in a different way. With individual attention and small student/teacher ratios our staff is able to build personalized relationships with the students. By getting to know each other, lessons can be tailored to match exact learning styles and abilities. In this way we can make huge strides. I am adamant that drama is left on the sidewalk. Inside HDG, we are all working together toward a common goal. That way we can focus on the positive and leave the negative behind. The staff I have selected is as eclectic as the students we teach. Each staff member is appreciated for what they contribute. Quirks are celebrated. A diverse staff means we can connect with the students more easily. While we have high standards and for personal achievement regarding skills and athleticism, we also have high expectations for goals everyone can achieve. Punctuality, commitment, respect, accountability, and perseverance are as rewarded as physical abilities. And then there’s fun. It is much easier to face difficult tasks and challenges if everyone is having fun. It is easier to laugh at mistakes than be ashamed of them. It is easier to accept temporary setbacks when they can be taken gently. What I didn’t realize as I set these goals is that what we created is a family. Inside the walls of HDG, a family has been built. Family members are different and diverse. Each person may have different opinions or personal goals, but when it comes down to it, a family should be supportive of ALL its members by appreciating the positive and accepting the negative. That’s what you’ll get when you join at HDG. You will meet a hard-working, fun-loving family of diverse people working toward a positive goal.
